KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4<\/strong> —\u00a0The ringgit opened slightly higher\u00a0against the US dollar on Wednesday despite\u00a0market\u00a0uncertainty over\u00a0the US Federal Reserve\u2019s (Fed) upcoming interest rate decision, dealers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 9 am, the local note appreciated to 4.4040\/4100 versus the greenback from Tuesday\u2019s close of 4.4050\/4084.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes\u00a0told Bernama that going into the new year, the old problems\u00a0continued to influence the broader markets, specifically uncertainties\u00a0around the Fed\u2019s terminal rate and whether the world would\u00a0fall into a recession.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cHence, the ringgit\u00a0opened\u00a0marginally higher today, given the risk-off\u00a0impulses from the US market with lower stock\u00a0and bond yields,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It fell against the British pound to 5.2800\/2871 from 5.2538\/2579 at Tuesday\u2019s close, depreciated against the euro to 4.6497\/6561 from 4.6460\/6495 previously, and weakened versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2773\/2822 from 3.2768\/2798.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the ringgit rose vis-a-vis the Japanese yen to 3.3616\/3667 from 3.3755\/3786 yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
