A\u00a0total of 789 premises or 47 per cent of buildings in Selangor which require certification by the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) were found to be operating without a\u00a0fire certificate (FC), according to Selangor JBPM director\u00a0Datuk Norazam Khamis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the premises without fire certificate included\u00a0394 factories, 129 office buildings, 117 warehouses and\u00a067 shops such as supermarkets, grocery stores and\u00a0shopping centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from this, 37 hotels,\u00a022 hostels, 17 hospitals and\u00a0treatment centres, five places of gatherings such as multipurpose halls and clubhouses, and one\u00a0library were also found to be without a fire certificate, he told Bernama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norazam said owners of premises should be aware of the existing law that requires them to obtain a fire certificate according to the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM-1024x565.png\" alt=\"fire\" class=\"wp-image-15816\" width=\"619\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM-1024x565.png 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM-768x423.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM-181x100.png 181w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM-350x193.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM-800x441.png 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot-2022-12-16-at-7.48.17-PM.png 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Building owners need to have this certificate to confirm that the fire safety system in their premises is working properly and able to detect fires, issue warnings,\u00a0and in some cases\u00a0extinguish fires automatically,&#8221;<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norazam said the reasons given by building owners for not possessing FCs include being unaware of the need for the certificate and having insufficient financial resources to maintain the fire safety&nbsp;system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, he advised owners of premises who still do not have an FC to obtain one to avoid being subjected to legal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norazam said anyone found guilty of not possessing an FC&nbsp;can be fined not more than RM50,000 or imprisoned for up to five years or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;We are also giving a 30-day grace period to newly identified premises (that do not have FCs) to give owners time to prepare and submit the relevant documentation to JBPM,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/general\/news_disaster.php?id=2148439\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SHAH ALAM, Dec 16 &#8212;
