Kuala Lumpur, Nov 19<\/strong> — About 58% of eligible voters have come out to vote as of 2pm, the Election Commission (EC) reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that more than 12.3 million votes had been cast so far, with polling scheduled to end at 6pm in the peninsula and 5.30pm in Sabah and Sarawak.<\/p>\n\n\n

There are 21,173,638 voters eligible to cast their ballots in the general election. Of the 224,832 eligible early voters comprising policemen, soldiers and their spouses, 212,961, or 94.72%, had cast their ballots on Nov 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polling centres in the peninsula opened at 8am while centres in Sabah and Sarawak opened at 7.30am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 939 candidates, including 20 parties and 107 independents, are contesting for 221 parliamentary seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 116 state seats are also up for grabs, including the Bugaya state seat which was left vacant after the death of its incumbent, Manis Muka Darah, in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 429 candidates are vying for these seats in Perak (59), Pahang (41) and Perlis (15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
