{"id":15453,"date":"2022-11-08T13:18:47","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T05:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=15453"},"modified":"2022-11-08T13:18:49","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T05:18:49","slug":"many-young-voters-are-fence-sitters-say-political-observers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=15453","title":{"rendered":"Many young voters are fence-sitters, say political observers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>GEORGE TOWN, Nov 8<\/strong> &#8212; Candidates for the 15th General Election (GE15) need to be smart about their political branding to appear more attractive to young voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Political sociology lecturer from the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian, said most of these young voters are fence-sitters or still undecided about&nbsp;choosing their candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThey may choose not to vote. However, if a leader has his own brand\u00a0that can be promoted\u00a0by the party with a character to be emulated, these young voters will come out to support that leader.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis is because the agents of socialisation that can influence the young voters are the party leaders themselves, besides family, peers, educational institutions, government agencies and the media,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he told Bernama recently.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/youth-crowd-crossing-road-KL-AFP-271020-1.jpg\" alt=\"young voters\" class=\"wp-image-11947\" width=\"630\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/youth-crowd-crossing-road-KL-AFP-271020-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/youth-crowd-crossing-road-KL-AFP-271020-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/youth-crowd-crossing-road-KL-AFP-271020-1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/youth-crowd-crossing-road-KL-AFP-271020-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/youth-crowd-crossing-road-KL-AFP-271020-1-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/youth-crowd-crossing-road-KL-AFP-271020-1-800x532.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to statistics from the Election Commission (EC), about 68,000 voters out of over 1.2 million registered voters in Penang aged between 18 and&nbsp;20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In GE14, Pakatan Harapan representatives dominated the Penang parliamentary seats, with DAP holding seven seats and&nbsp;PKR (four), while Barisan Nasional through UMNO (two) out of the total 13 seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, undergraduate Kishan Deepak Buxani, 25, from Batu Ferringhi, hoped that candidates would highlight the issue of youth unemployment in their political campaign as it is a serious, growing concern among the young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cNot many candidates are talking about this, and there is no direction or policy on how this issue will be tackled if any one coalition wins the election. Among the pressing issues for young voters are employment, salary and cost of living,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;political science final year student at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak&nbsp;said many of his peers are eager to go back to their hometown to cast their ballots&nbsp;but face the dilemma of&nbsp;either spending money on travel fare&nbsp;or keeping them \u2018to survive the next month\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kishan and his three friends founded a movement called #SiswaBalik to reach out to youth currently studying in Sarawak and found that 76.7 per cent of respondents hope to return to their constituency but are unable to do so due to expensive travel fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat is even more surprising is that 49.7 per cent of them study\u00a0in their native land of Sarawak. Therefore, we plead to the EC\u00a0to allow postal votes for students and for the interim government to work with transportation companies to come up with a fixed, affordable rate for students,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, a waiter at a restaurant in Penanti, Muhammad Afiq Syazani, 21, hoped to see a candidate who is serious about improving the lives of the locals, including offering more job opportunities with higher wages and upgrading rural infrastructures to be on par as those in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAmong them is road infrastructure. Most of the roads in village areas are narrow and difficult to access.
