government for three\u00a0terms, is seen as a stronghold of Pakatan\u00a0Harapan\u00a0(PH), but the door is always open to\u00a0other parties to capture\u00a0the state in the 15th General Election (GE15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political sociology lecturer from the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian&nbsp;said Tasek Gelugor, Nibong Tebal and Bayan Baru are among the parliamentary seats open for intense competition between PH,&nbsp;Barisan Nasional (BN) and&nbsp;Perikatan Nasional (PN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;If a suitable candidate is fielded\u00a0in the areas, those who have\u00a0good\u00a0reputation, credibility, authority and\u00a0hold a high position in the party, that\u00a0will give added value to the party to capture\u00a0the seats,&#8221; <\/em>he told Bernama\u00a0recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In GE14, PH&nbsp;won 11&nbsp;of the 13&nbsp;parliamentary seats at stake (DAP seven, PKR four) and&nbsp;the BN won two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sivamurugan, however,\u00a0said\u00a0seats such as\u00a0Bagan, Bukit Mertajam, Batu Kawan, Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Jelutong and Bukit Gelugor were difficult to penetrate.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An UMNO veteran Datuk Abdul Rashid Ismail said there was&nbsp;no such thing as a safe seat in any election because anything can happen in the political world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAnything can happen because it is the voters who determine the candidate&#8217;s victory,&#8221;<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Penang&nbsp;Council of Former Elected Representatives president&nbsp;said&nbsp;the two UMNO seats will be&nbsp;safe if UMNO people are really sincere and support the candidates representing BN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Sivamurugan said Undi18 voters should&nbsp;also be the focus&nbsp;in Penang because most of them were&nbsp;fence-sitters&nbsp;and the probability of them going out to vote was&nbsp;still uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said socialisation agents such as families, peer groups, educational institutions, government agencies, media and party leaders could influence the young voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to&nbsp;the Election Commission, more than 68,000 voters out of more than 1.2 million registered voters in Penang are between the ages of 18 and 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a
