The ringgit continued its downtrend against the US dollar on Friday, opening at&nbsp;a fresh all-time low of 4.73&nbsp;due to a lack of market catalysts, exacerbated by&nbsp;global market uncertainties, dealers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 9 am, the local note depreciated by 75 basis points to&nbsp;4.7345\/7360 versus the greenback from yesterday\u2019s close of&nbsp;4.7270\/7290.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ActivTrades trader Dyogenes Rodrigues Diniz said the US dollar continued to strengthen\u00a0on the\u00a0back of the United States (US) Initial Jobless Claims data which recorded a lower-than-expected\u00a0reading (214,000 actual against 230,000\u00a0forecast).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NMT.png\" alt=\"ringgit\" class=\"wp-image-14885\" width=\"546\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NMT.png 940w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NMT-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NMT-768x644.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NMT-119x100.png 119w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NMT-350x293.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/NMT-800x671.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the US Federal Reserve (Fed)&nbsp;aims to control inflation and keep the unemployment rate low, the Initial Jobless Claims indicator sends a message that the job market is heated in the US,&nbsp;making&nbsp;it more likely that the Fed will continue to hike the interest rate in the short-to-medium term,\u201d he told Bernama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the US existing home sales data also came in higher than expected, signalling that the US housing market is also strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth indicators show a potentially positive economic scenario for the US, which provides the&nbsp;space for more interventions by the Fed&nbsp;as it attempts to contain inflation, currently accelerating at its fastest rate in 40 years,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing director&nbsp;Stephen Innes said&nbsp;the&nbsp;Japanese yen has also hit its weakest level since 1990 on Thursday, and&nbsp;the British pound slid after the United Kingdom\u2019s prime minister Lizz Truss announced her resignation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime,&nbsp;the ringgit was traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local currency fell against the euro to 4.6261\/6275&nbsp;from 4.6244\/6264, depreciated vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.3055\/3072 from 5.2971\/29935 at the close yesterday and slid&nbsp;against the Singapore dollar to 3.3215\/3230 from 3.3172\/3188 previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it improved versus&nbsp;the Japanese yen to 3.1530\/1542 from 3.1547\/1565 on Wednesday\u2019s closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/market\/news.php?id=2130981\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 &#8212;
