SINGAPORE, Oct 15<\/strong> —\u00a0Singapore stands ready to robustly defend its\u00a0sovereignty over Pedra Branca and will deal with whatever legal action Malaysia may pursue, says\u00a0the republic\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)\u00a0spokesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson said this\u00a0in a statement in response to media queries on Malaysia\u2019s decision\u00a0to proceed with legal action at the\u00a0International Court of Justice (ICJ)\u00a0on the dispute involving sovereignty over Pedra Branca, Middle Rocks, and South Ledge.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cSingapore is unable to comment on Malaysia\u2019s intentions to continue legal action at\u00a0ICJ\u00a0since no details have been shared,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the spokesman added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caretaker Prime Minister\u00a0Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Thursday (Oct 13) said that the Cabinet had\u00a0agreed on the matter\u00a0after hearing the presentation and proposals by the special task force to review laws relating to sovereignty over the disputed islets on Oct 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the special task force had also proposed that the government take appropriate action to defend the country’s sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ismail Sabri said in a statement that the meeting was informed on the possibility of negligence and error on the part of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when Malaysia missed the opportunity to file a review application against the ICJ judgment in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2008, the ICJ awarded Pedra Branca to Singapore, Middle Rocks to Malaysia, and said South Ledge, a rock formation visible only at low tide, belongs to whoever owns the territorial waters it sits in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
