{"id":14614,"date":"2022-08-15T14:36:44","date_gmt":"2022-08-15T06:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=14614"},"modified":"2022-08-15T14:36:45","modified_gmt":"2022-08-15T06:36:45","slug":"research-houses-upbeat-on-malaysias-economic-performance-for-2h2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=14614","title":{"rendered":"Research houses upbeat on Malaysia&#8217;s economic performance for 2H2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15<\/strong> &#8212; Research firms are bullish on Malaysia&#8217;s economic outlook for\u00a0the second half of this year (2H2022), based on the\u00a0significant improvements in the country&#8217;s recovery momentum in the second quarter of 2022 (Q2 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The positive recovery momentum was supported by&nbsp;increased domestic demand, continued improvement in labour market conditions&nbsp;and ongoing policy support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public Investment Bank Bhd (PublicInvest) said&nbsp;economic activities are&nbsp;expected to remain steady in 2H2022 going into 2023, amid dissipating pressures from supply chain disruptions and global inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDomestic demand is expected to remain firm, underpinned by improved consumption spending, higher tourist arrivals and the continued recovery in labour market conditions and income prospects.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM-1024x558.png\" alt=\"research\" class=\"wp-image-14615\" width=\"653\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM-1024x558.png 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM-768x418.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM-184x100.png 184w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM-350x191.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM-800x436.png 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-15-at-2.35.50-PM.png 1164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOn private investments, ongoing works and implementation\u00a0of multi-year and multi-billion ringgit projects like MyDigital, the East Coast Rail Link and Light Rail Transit Phase 3 will sustain activity,\u201d<\/em> it said in a note today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, PublicInvest said Malaysia\u2019s growth momentum remains susceptible to downside risks, including policy movement in major economies, China\u2019s strict lockdown policies and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cRaw material\u00a0shortages and supply chain disruptions are expected to gradually dissipate in 2H2022 going into 2023, though the country\u2019s impending 15th General Election within the coming year may be a distraction to our ongoing recovery,\u201d<\/em> it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Ambank Research (Ambank)&nbsp;also expects&nbsp;Malaysia\u2019s GDP to record positive growth in 2H2022, partly supported by the low base of -0.4 per cent in 2H2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cBesides the low base, we foresee the economy to continue benefiting from strong export earnings, backed by firm commodity prices, a still healthy global semiconductor environment, resource-based exports, and Foreign Direct Investment\u00a0inflows,\u201d<\/em> it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambank also opined that domestic activities, primarily private expenditure, would&nbsp;continue to support the overall economic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pick-up in tourism activities following the opening of the borders would benefit tourism and tourism-related industries, while&nbsp;rising&nbsp;employment rate and accelerating growth traction in the informal sectors and the focus on sustainability would&nbsp;add positive impetus to private expenditure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cBut the upside to the economy is being contained by shortages of foreign workers at the entry-level and talents.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThese have resulted in significant losses in terms of business opportunities as well as revenue to the government.
