{"id":14089,"date":"2022-06-08T11:56:06","date_gmt":"2022-06-08T03:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=14089"},"modified":"2022-06-08T11:56:08","modified_gmt":"2022-06-08T03:56:08","slug":"ge15-can-wait-rakyat-facing-hard-times-now-govt-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=14089","title":{"rendered":"GE15 can wait, Rakyat facing hard times now, govt told"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>KUALA LUMPUR, June 8<\/strong> &#8212;\u00a0Many are of the opinion that the government should fully focus\u00a0on efforts to govern the country and solve problems faced by the people instead of rushing to call for\u00a0the 15th General Election (GE15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Political analyst Dr Mazlan Ali said among the issues that the government must pay attention to were the fall in the ringgit and inflation which have affected&nbsp;consumers and &nbsp;society as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The senior lecturer at the Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, said the government should make the most of the political stability achieved through the signing of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Memorandum of Understanding&nbsp;(MoU) on Transformation and Political Stability by making decisions that bring benefits to the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe government today can pass any bill in the interest of the people\u00a0and the country&#8230;therefore,\u00a0I do not see the need for an election,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said when contacted by Bernama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Institute for Research and\u00a0Development of Policy chief liaison officer Sheikh Khuzaifah Sheik Abu Bakar said there must be a stong reason for the government to hold GE15\u00a0as\u00a0the country was still facing various challenges such as rising prices of goods and\u00a0efforts to\u00a0control communicable diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1-1024x560.png\" alt=\"ge15\" class=\"wp-image-14090\" width=\"467\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1-1024x560.png 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1-768x420.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1-183x100.png 183w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1-350x191.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1-800x438.png 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-08-at-11.54.29-AM-1.png 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAll parties (the government) should now give their\u00a0100 per cent focus to solving the country\u2019s problems such as reviving\u00a0the economy and so on. We should not waste time on political issues anymore because we have strayed from the track\u00a0for many years,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing an example,&nbsp;Sheikh Khuzaifah said&nbsp;the&nbsp;Johor State Election should have not been held&nbsp;because for him there was no solid reason to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cA\u00a0lot of time and resources were spent to hold the state election,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association&nbsp;(PPIM)&nbsp;chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan&nbsp;said it was important for the government to find the most suitable timing to hold&nbsp;GE15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said&nbsp;the people were very much hoping for the best and a change in government management&nbsp;in the current new normal environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, some members of the public also opposed to having GE15 in a rush as the people were still facing various challenges and difficulties in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A human resources officer at an oil and gas company who only wanted to be known as Ahmad, 25, said it was not necessary for now because elections&nbsp;are&nbsp;costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing the same sentiment, executive manager at&nbsp;a private company, Zulkarlnain Haqiem Aziz, 32, said it would be better if the large expenditure incurred by the government to hold GE15 was used to help the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe government or the opposition must first find ways\u00a0to address problems faced by the\u00a0people and ensure\u00a0that\u00a0their welfare\u00a0is always\u00a0protected before holding GE15,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The media previously reported&nbsp;that a total RM420 million was spent by the Election Commission for the Johor, Sarawak, Melaka and Sabah elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said of the amount, RM130 million&nbsp;were spent on holding the Sabah state electinn;&nbsp;Melaka polls (RM45 million;&nbsp;Sarawak polls (RM149 million) and&nbsp;Johor polls (RM96 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a
