{"id":14086,"date":"2022-06-07T19:00:33","date_gmt":"2022-06-07T11:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=14086"},"modified":"2022-06-07T19:00:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-07T11:00:34","slug":"1mdb-was-set-up-as-a-bn-political-fund-ex-chief-secretary-tells-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=14086","title":{"rendered":"1MDB was set up as a BN political fund, ex-chief secretary tells court"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>KUALA LUMPUR, June 7<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8212; Former Chief Secretary to the Government\u00a0Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan told the High Court here today that according to his understanding,\u00a0strategic investment company 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was set up as a political fund for the ruling party then, Barisan Nasional (BN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohd Sidek, 71, said as such, he had never asked&nbsp;former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak or any party in 1MDB about the problems in the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the issues that troubled 1MDB were only known to him through the mass media such as newspapers and the Internet, adding that he was aware that they were related to allegations of misuse of funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI was also aware from\u00a0newspaper reports that investigations on 1MDB were being conducted by local agencies such as the\u00a0Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), but I was never briefed or given further details on them.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM-1024x558.png\" alt=\"secretary\" class=\"wp-image-14087\" width=\"477\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM-1024x558.png 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM-183x100.png 183w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM-350x191.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM-800x436.png 800w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screenshot-2022-06-07-at-6.57.05-PM.png 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI can confirm that\u00a0Datuk Seri Najib, as\u00a0prime minister (then) had never informed me of\u00a0issues in 1MDB, although I had been appointed as a member of the 1MDB Board of Advisors.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI had also never asked\u00a0Datuk Seri Najib why there was no\u00a01MDB Board of Advisors meetings held throughout my time as a member and (why) no 1MDB representatives had reported to me on operations and investments made by the company,\u201d<\/em> he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohd Sidek said when reading his witness statement during examination-in-chief by Deputy Public Prosecutor&nbsp;Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam in Najib\u2019s trial over the misappropriation of RM2.3 billion in funds from 1MDB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the 19th&nbsp;prosecution witness said he was of the opinion that his appointment as a member of the 1MDB Board of Advisors was only to supplement his income (as chief secretary to the government), which he added that according to Najib, was considered low.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhen\u00a0Datuk Seri Najib was prime minister, he once asked me about my salary as chief secretary to the government, and he felt that it was quite low,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Mohd Sidek, who held the post of\u00a0chief secretary to the government from September 2006 to June 2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On his appointment as a member of the 1MDB Advisory Board, Mohd Sidek said it was made official through a letter issued by Najib and dated August 30, 2012.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAlthough I was appointed as a member of the 1MDB Advisory Board, I have never been involved in any meetings or discussions on the company&#8217;s issues and had\u00a0never been invited to attend 1MDB&#8217;s annual meetings. I had\u00a0also never asked Datuk Seri Najib or 1MDB to be appointed as a member of this Advisory Board,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Mohd Sidek, he&nbsp;received an allowance of RM30,000 per month during his initial tenure as a member of the 1MDB Advisory Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAfter I retired as chief secretary to the government, I was still receiving an allowance of RM10,000 per month until I\u00a0no longer held this position in June 2015,\u201d<\/em> he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohd Sidek said on June 2, 2016, he received a letter from the 1MDB chief executive officer&nbsp;Arul Kanda Kandasamy that 1MDB Advisory Board had been dissolved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI was not informed through\u00a0this letter on the reasons why the\u00a01MDB Advisory Board was dissolved and I also did not know either why it was dissolved.
