{"id":13939,"date":"2022-05-14T10:48:28","date_gmt":"2022-05-14T02:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13939"},"modified":"2022-05-14T10:48:30","modified_gmt":"2022-05-14T02:48:30","slug":"asean-stands-firm-on-international-issues-during-meeting-with-president-biden-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13939","title":{"rendered":"ASEAN stands firm on international issues during meeting with President Biden &#8211; PM"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>WASHINGTON D.C, May 14<\/strong> &#8212;\u00a0ASEAN leaders stand firm on several international issues during their meeting with United States President Joe Biden at the ASEAN-US Special Summit here Friday (Saturday in Malaysia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said ASEAN leaders also showed a common stand during the discussions on Russia-Ukraine and South China Sea issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASEAN wanted the Russia-Ukraine crisis to be resolved at the negotiation table, he told Malaysian media after attending the final session of the two-day special summit together with President Biden and ASEAN leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWar does not benefit anyone. In fact, many would suffer great losses because of the war,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, Malaysia, he said, felt that the US should use its influence to help solve\u00a0the Russia-Ukraine crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FW1238382_USA22_14052022_PM_ASEAN_US-lpr.jpg\" alt=\"international issues\" class=\"wp-image-13940\" width=\"495\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FW1238382_USA22_14052022_PM_ASEAN_US-lpr.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FW1238382_USA22_14052022_PM_ASEAN_US-lpr-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FW1238382_USA22_14052022_PM_ASEAN_US-lpr-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FW1238382_USA22_14052022_PM_ASEAN_US-lpr-133x100.jpg 133w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FW1238382_USA22_14052022_PM_ASEAN_US-lpr-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/FW1238382_USA22_14052022_PM_ASEAN_US-lpr-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ismail Sabri said Malaysia pointed out that Southeast Asian countries were also affected by the war, especially in terms of the rise in inflation and food prices, hence the&nbsp;call for the war to be resolved through peaceful means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Feb 24, Russia launched a full military operation on Ukraine, days after Kremlin recognised the independence of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Touching on the South China Sea issue, the Prime Minister said ASEAN was also firm in its stand&nbsp;that the waterway should be free from outsiders&#8217; interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe South China Sea must remain free in line with\u00a0the Freedom of Navigation which is an international law (of the sea). Any conflict in the area will affect the global supply chains,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Malaysian leader also called on all countries to respect ASEAN\u2019s stand on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam are the claimants for most or part of the natural resources-rich South China Sea and the issues have not been resolved for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cASEAN solidarity on international issues was obvious during the discussion with President Biden. The ASEAN principles of Zone of Peace, Freedom, and Neutrality were perfectly translated during the meeting,\u201d<\/em> Ismail Sabri said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Malaysian prime minister said he had also raised the Palestinian issue during the meeting and called for Washington to use its influence in resolving the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIsraeli atrocities must be stopped. The US\u00a0must be honest in resolving the issue.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIf the US can take swift action in Ukraine, we want the same swift action to be taken on the Palestinian issue,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ismail Sabri said that also raised at the meeting were the Myanmar issue and the need for the 5-Point Consensus to be observed in resolving the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting was attended by all ASEAN leaders except from Myanmar and the Philippines.
