The Malaysian men\u2019s badminton squad kicked off their 2022 Thomas Cup Finals campaign in stunning fashion as they cruised to a 5-0 victory against England in the opening fixture of Group D at the Impact Arena, here,\u00a0today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysian singles ace, Lee Zii Jia proved too strong for&nbsp;Toby Penty as he raced to a comfortable 8-0 lead in the earlier stage of the opening&nbsp;game&nbsp;before taking&nbsp;the first set,&nbsp;21-10,&nbsp;and successfully put the national team 1-0 ahead with a 21-15 win in the next set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tokyo Olympics 2020 men\u2019s doubles bronze medallists,\u00a0Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik\u00a0doubled the lead for Malaysia\u00a0after they overcame a strong challenge from\u00a0Ben Lane-Sean Vendy in the second set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-09-at-23.47.18.png\" alt=\"england\" class=\"wp-image-13903\" width=\"502\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-09-at-23.47.18.png 587w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-09-at-23.47.18-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-09-at-23.47.18-186x100.png 186w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-09-at-23.47.18-350x188.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it was not plain sailing for\u00a0Malaysia\u2019s number one pair as they had to bounce\u00a0back from first set defeat,\u00a019-21,\u00a0before they went on to prevail\u00a0against\u00a0the \u2018stubborn\u2019 English pair in the next two sets, winning in 21-15, 21-16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only that, the match which was delayed for over five minutes in the second set&nbsp;due to lighting issues did not affect Aaron-Wooi Yik\u2019s momentum to put Malaysia in the driving seat against England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI think one of the doors inside the arena was open and this caused a slight glare on us on the court, I don&#8217;t know why the organisers took so long to close it but in the end, they managed to close it slightly,\u201d<\/em> Aaron told reporters when met after the match at the mixed zone here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron,&nbsp;who is also the team captain, however, was unsatisfied with their performance especially when they went down in the first set&nbsp;but was glad they regained their confidence in the next two sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rising star, Ng Tze Yong then confirmed the winning point for Malaysia after he was made to slog for 65 minutes against Johnnie Torjussen, but prevailed\u00a021-16, 19-21, 21-11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tze Yong, ranked 46th best in the world, was gutted to have to surrender the second set to Torjussen due to a strong draft inside the venue but was pleased that he was able to find his way out to contribute the third point for the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>German Open 2022 champions, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin continued the winning momentum for the national team&nbsp;as they outperformed Rory Easton-Zach Russ 21-13, 21-9 to make it Malaysia 4&nbsp;England 0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National third singles, Leong Jun Hao capped off a wonderful day for Malaysia as he needed just 40 minutes to get past Cholan Kayan in 21-11, 21-18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia will surely eye another win against the United States (USA) in their second fixture to confirm their last eight spots tomorrow after the American team suffered a heavy 0-5 loss to\u00a0hot favorites\u00a0Japan in the other Group D action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/news.php?id=2079151\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BANGKOK, May 9 &#8212;
