Yilamaran\u00a0bagged the country\u2019s first medal at the 24th Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil yesterday (early Tuesday morning in Malaysia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 22-year-old settled for a silver medal after losing\u00a0to Makhno Oleksanr of Ukraine in\u00a0the final of the men\u2019s Kumite below 84kg category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf), Yilamaran had earlier defeated Brazilian Sergio Garcia\u00a0in the first round, followed by Israel\u2019s Avi Bokler (quarter-finals) and Iran\u2019s Abdolghafour Ebhahim (semi-finals).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-15.36.04.png\" alt=\"karate\" class=\"wp-image-13873\" width=\"511\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-15.36.04.png 589w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-15.36.04-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-15.36.04-160x100.png 160w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-15.36.04-350x219.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>National contingent head&nbsp;Ong Shin Ruenn, who was in Brazil to watch the final, said he was very proud of Yilamaran&#8217;s achievement as the exponent was making his debut in the Deaflympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a post uploaded on the MSDeaf Facebook page, he said that with the historic achievement, the national deaf sports contingent had the opportunity to add to the medal tally through other sports such as badminton, cycling&nbsp;and athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last November, Yilamaran made history when he captured Malaysia\u2019s first medal &#8211; a bronze &#8211; at the inaugural World Deaf Karate Championships in Tehran, Iran<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the official website, a total of 1,956 athletes from 70 countries are competing in the May 1-15 Deaflympics in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu congratulated Yilamaran on his achievement at the Deaflympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWell done to our national deaf athlete. Yilamaran is a national hero!
