When contacted, Navin was\u00a0still at Changi Prison to claim the remains of his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nagaenthran, 34, is the second of four siblings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday (April 26), the\u00a0Singapore Court of Appeal dismissed a legal challenge filed by Nagaenthran\u2019s mother in a last-ditch attempt to set aside her son&#8217;s conviction and death sentence.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-27-at-10.57.10.png\" alt=\"Nagaenthran\" class=\"wp-image-13838\" width=\"520\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-27-at-10.57.10.png 586w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-27-at-10.57.10-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-27-at-10.57.10-158x100.png 158w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-27-at-10.57.10-350x221.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Panchalai Supermaniam filed the legal challenge for her son with the help of friends and activists and was not represented by any lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hearing was heard before three Justices namely Andrew Phang; Judith Prakash; and Belinda Ang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basis of the legal challenge was that Judge Sundaresh Menon who presided over and dismissed Nagaenthran\u2019s appeals was earlier the Attorney General who had prosecuted Nagaenthran and secured his conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among others, the\u00a0decision which was read by Justice Phang said Nagaenthran should raise an objection to Menon\u00a0sitting on the\u00a0Coram <em>\u201cat the\u00a0appropriate juncture\u00a0and not at the eleventh hour\u00a0in a separate application in the attempt to delay his execution.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his mother&#8217;s application was dismissed, the court granted Nagaenthran\u2019s request&nbsp;to hold hands with his seven family members present in the courtroom through&nbsp;a slit in the glass panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hailing from Perak, Nagaenthran was sentenced to death in 2010 for trafficking 42.72g of heroin in 2009 into Singapore which is known to have among the world&#8217;s toughest narcotics laws.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nagaenthran\u2019s lawyers claim that he is intellectually disabled.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was supposed to be hanged on Nov 10, 2021, but found temporary respite on Nov 9 after the court was told he had tested positive for COVID-19 when he appeared for a last-bid attempt against his death sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Nov 7, 2021, it was reported that Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had written to his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong seeking leniency in this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, on&nbsp;Dec 3, Singapore President Halimah Yacob said he&nbsp;had&nbsp;been accorded full due process under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nagaenthran\u2019s fate drew an international outcry\u00a0against Singapore\u2019s tough narcotics laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/news.php?id=2076087\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SINGAPORE, April 27 &#8212;
