{"id":13597,"date":"2022-03-29T08:33:55","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T00:33:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13597"},"modified":"2022-03-29T08:33:56","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T00:33:56","slug":"azmin-urges-qatar-companies-to-partner-with-malaysian-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13597","title":{"rendered":"Azmin urges Qatar companies to partner with Malaysian businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>KUALA LUMPUR, March 29<\/strong> &#8212;  Qatari companies have been urged to take advantage of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) by partnering with Malaysian companies and subsequently being part of the new regional economic landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Minister cum Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the RCEP paves the way for businesses in the region to integrate into the world\u2019s largest free trade agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He tweeted that during his meeting with Qatar\u2019s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Qassim Al-Thani, he had informed his counterpart that the RCEP has come into force for Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RCEP covers 15 countries with a combined population of 2.3 billion people or 30% of the world\u2019s population, accounting for about 30% of the global gross domestic product (GDP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from tariff reductions, the RCEP also addresses trade liberalization, boosts trade facilitation, and enhances the business environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-29-at-08.29.19.png\" alt=\"companies\" class=\"wp-image-13598\" width=\"484\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-29-at-08.29.19.png 828w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-29-at-08.29.19-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-29-at-08.29.19-768x527.png 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-29-at-08.29.19-146x100.png 146w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-29-at-08.29.19-350x240.png 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-29-at-08.29.19-800x549.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting, both parties also acknowledged the importance of the Malaysia-Qatar Joint Trade Committee (JTC) in identifying potential new areas of bilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTo give our bilateral trade a new impetus, I proposed that Malaysia and Qatar set a trade target of US$1 billion by 2025.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI believe that this target is attainable as our bilateral trade increased by 24.4% last year, and Malaysia&#8217;s exports to Qatar increased by 31.9% in 2021 compared to 2020, despite the unprecedented economic challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,\u201d<\/em> said Mohamed Azmin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that both governments have agreed to hold the third JTC Meeting in order to chart the future path of economic growth of both countries, focusing on the strategic and high-impact sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMalaysia and Qatar will also continue to work on the Investment Guarantee Agreement to encourage more cross-border investments between the two countries, as we strive for a strong and sustainable economic recovery,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The senior minister was one of the members of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob\u2019s delegation during the prime minister\u2019s official visit to Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qatar is an important trading partner for Malaysia with a trade volume of close to US$0.8 billion in 2019, although this had declined to US$ 0.5 billion and US$0.63 billion in 2020 and 2021&nbsp;respectively&nbsp;due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Qatar\u2019s Agrico to invest in Malaysia\u2019s Agri industry and palm-based manufacturing<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In another tweet, Mohamed Azmin said Qatar\u2019s Agrico Agriculture Development W.L.L.
