KUALA LUMPUR, March 24<\/strong> — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will use Bahasa Melayu\u00a0when delivering his speech at\u00a0two international conferences scheduled to take place later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah said the international conferences are the ASEAN Summit which is expected to take place this November and the United Nations (UN) Conference on the third week of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Leaders from other countries who attend such a big conference also use their national language,\u00a0so we do not need to feel\u00a0awkward.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Next week, the Prime Minister will make\u00a0official visits to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and there he will use Bahasa Melayu,”<\/em> he told\u00a0a press conference at the Parliament building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday,\u00a0Ismail Sabri said he\u00a0will confer with ASEAN leaders to propose the use of Bahasa Melayu as ASEAN’s second language, in an effort to elevate the mother tongue at the international level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saifuddin said the ministry fully supported the Prime Minister’s aspirations and had made specific and immediate preparations in terms of proficiency in Bahasa Melayu and proficiency in the five major foreign languages used by the UN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the move also involved, among others, reintroducing the third language allowance as a motivation for the ministry officials to learn foreign languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore this,\u00a0there was a third language allowance, we will discuss with the Public Service Department how to reintroduce\u00a0the allowance.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“However, we feel that this is not only for our officers but also for officers from other ministries who work abroad,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Wisma Putra will start sending official letters to foreign countries using Bahasa Melayu with translations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
