KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — The Home Ministry (KDN) will not allow ketum leaves to be exported to Thailand as proposed by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said ketum export\u00a0was against the Poisons Act 1952 which prohibited\u00a0any activity related to importing, exporting, manufacturing, supplying, selling, or possessing and using ketum illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is probably the Menteri Besar\u2019s personal request.\u00a0But for the time being, we’re not going to allow it,\u201d<\/em> he told a press conference after launching the \u2018Kita Demi Negara\u2019 campaign here today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Muhammad Sanusi proposed to the federal government to allow the export of ketum leaves to meet the high demand by pharmaceutical companies abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, ketum leaves, especially those grown in Kedah, are in high demand, especially in the neighboring country of\u00a0Thailand, where it is widely used for\u00a0medical purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, on the reopening of the country\u2019s borders on April 1, Hamzah said the ministry had begun its preparations especially in stepping up security since March 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“KDN is\u00a0ready for the reopening of the country\u2019s borders\u00a0and even before the reopening (of borders)\u00a0some studies need to be done, so there is no problem for us,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
