{"id":13486,"date":"2022-03-15T18:27:07","date_gmt":"2022-03-15T10:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13486"},"modified":"2022-03-15T18:27:09","modified_gmt":"2022-03-15T10:27:09","slug":"onn-hafiz-sworn-in-as-19th-menteri-besar-of-johor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13486","title":{"rendered":"Onn Hafiz sworn in as 19th Menteri Besar of Johor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>JOHOR BAHRU, March 15<\/strong> &#8212; Machap assemblyman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was sworn in as the 19th\u00a0Menteri Besar of Johor today following Barisan Nasional\u2019s victory in the\u00a0state election on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Onn, 44, took his oath of office before the Sultan of Johor&nbsp;Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar at the Balai Mengadap (Audience Hall) of Istana Bukit Serene here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also at the ceremony were&nbsp;the&nbsp;Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Johor BN chairman&nbsp;Datuk Hasni Mohammad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photographs&nbsp;of the swearing-in ceremony were uploaded on Sultan Ibrahim\u2019s Facebook account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the state polls,&nbsp;Onn Hafiz, 44, defeated&nbsp;Azlisham&nbsp;Azahar from Perikatan Nasional (PN),&nbsp;R. Sangaran (MUDA) and Datuk Dr Sharuddin Md Salleh (Pejuang) with a&nbsp;6,543-vote majority.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Onn Hafiz, who is the great-grandson of UMNO founder and former president&nbsp;Datuk Onn Jaafar, was Johor&nbsp;Tourism, Youth and Sports Committee&nbsp;chairman until the state legislative assembly was dissolved on Jan 22.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web14.bernama.com\/storage\/photos\/43bf5debf358de8135ba75987050ec266230658d27b97\" alt=\"onn hafiz\" width=\"507\" height=\"316\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An accounting degree holder from the&nbsp;University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom, he was also Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein\u2019s political secretary from&nbsp;2013 until&nbsp;2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Onn Hafiz\u2019s appointment came as a surprise as, throughout the recent\u00a0election campaign, only Hasni\u2019s name was mentioned by BN as the Johor Menteri Besar candidate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday,&nbsp; Hasni, who is also Johor BN chairman, suggested that the BN leadership choose a younger leader to lead Johor, saying&nbsp;that&nbsp;the support and position of youths were important in the development of Johor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web14.bernama.com\/storage\/photos\/fe13b03830fd22e099aa92214b343c78623065c26ecdf\" alt=\"onn hafiz\" width=\"479\" height=\"299\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasni was appointed Menteri Besar on Feb 28, 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasni is the third Menteri Besar to be appointed since the 14th&nbsp;general election in 2018 after&nbsp;the late Datuk Osman Sapian and Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Saturday\u2019s elections, BN won with more than a two-thirds majority, taking 40 out of the 56 seats contested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier, the official car carrying&nbsp;Sultan Ibrahim was seen arriving at Istana&nbsp;Bukit Serene at about 2.50 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newsmen, after obtaining information of a possible swearing-in ceremony,&nbsp;began gathering at the palace grounds at&nbsp;noon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/prn.bernama.com\/johor\/news.php?id=2062079\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JOHOR BAHRU, March 15 &#8212;
