{"id":13404,"date":"2022-03-01T19:37:19","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T11:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13404"},"modified":"2022-03-01T19:37:20","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T11:37:20","slug":"govt-eyes-tax-revenue-collection-of-rm139-bln-for-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13404","title":{"rendered":"Govt eyes tax revenue collection of RM139 bln for 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>CYBERJAYA, March 1&nbsp; &#8212; The government expects its tax revenue collection to return to pre-pandemic levels by meeting or surpassing the target of RM139 billion this year, said Prime Minister&nbsp;Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that to support this goal, the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) management needs to formulate&nbsp;short- and mid-term strategies to achieve the target while&nbsp;maintaining its good performance in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis includes identifying new economic sectors and implementing the tax laws in a transparent, effective, and efficient manner. Indirectly, the effort will increase the Malaysian Family&#8217;s trust and ensure that taxpayers fulfill their responsibilities,\u201d<\/em> he said in his speech\u00a0for IRB&#8217;s\u00a026th\u00a0Revenue Day celebration today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-01-at-19.36.09.png\" alt=\"revenue\" class=\"wp-image-13405\" width=\"420\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-01-at-19.36.09.png 584w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-01-at-19.36.09-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-01-at-19.36.09-184x100.png 184w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-01-at-19.36.09-350x190.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The text of his speech was read out by Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 2021, Ismail Sabri said, revenue collection jumped 17 percent year-on-year to more than RM140 billion while the country&#8217;s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 3.1 percent compared with a 5.6 percent contraction in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also noted that\u00a0the government would implement the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) to increase the efficiency and transparency in the country&#8217;s tax collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, starting from 2023, all businesses seeking government projects must have TCCs as the main prerequisite, the Prime Minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To improve the labor market as well as\u00a0strengthen the business sector, the Finance Ministry would implement fiscal reforms towards a more efficient and transparent taxation system by holding\u00a0various engagement sessions, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTowards this end, the government will table the Fiscal Responsibility Act with the aim of improving governance, accountability and transparency in the country&#8217;s fiscal management.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis includes developing the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy that features clearly defined revenue targets in line with global best practices as well as a more transparent, fair, and equitable tax system through the use of big data,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri expressed confidence that\u00a0the government&#8217;s GDP forecast for 2022 of between 5.5 and 6.5 percent would be achieved, in line with the projections by the International Monetary Fund (5.7 percent) and World Bank (5.8 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis will be driven by the expansionary Budget 2022, recovery in economic and social activities as well as strong external demand that will continue to spur growth,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At today&#8217;s event, 10 business entities were honored with\u00a0the 2021 Best Taxpayer Award, including Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd, Hong Leong Bank Bhd, YTY Industry Sdn Bhd, and\u00a0Nestle Products Sdn Bhd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/news.php?id=2056955\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CYBERJAYA, March 1&nbsp;
