{"id":13392,"date":"2022-02-27T20:13:29","date_gmt":"2022-02-27T12:13:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13392"},"modified":"2022-02-27T20:13:30","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T12:13:30","slug":"bn-does-not-see-multi-cornered-contests-as-an-advantage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13392","title":{"rendered":"BN does not see multi-cornered contests as an advantage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BATU PAHAT, Feb 27\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0Barisan Nasional (BN) does not view the situation of being involved in 35 four-cornered fights in the Johor state election as an advantage for the party to score easy wins, said BN chairman\u00a0Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said BN was confident about its own strength and not too concerned about the number of candidates vying for a seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe winds of change have begun to blow in Johor,\u00a0not only among the Malays \u2026\u00a0support from Indian and Chinese voters especially in urban areas has started to shift to\u00a0BN candidates,\u201d<\/em> he told reporters after attending a gathering with the people at the Ayer Hitam Barat voting district centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 56 seats up for grabs in the polls, two constituencies namely&nbsp;Kempas and&nbsp;Tiram see seven-cornered fights, four are six-cornered contests, eight are five-cornered, 35 are four-cornered, and seven are three-cornered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmad Zahid, who is UMNO president, said the\u00a0BN Manifesto to be\u00a0unveiled soon would give hope to the younger generation it would include an offer of second-generation homes by the state government for Felda settlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-27-at-19.57.41.png\" alt=\"cornered\" class=\"wp-image-13393\" width=\"486\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-27-at-19.57.41.png 590w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-27-at-19.57.41-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-27-at-19.57.41-185x100.png 185w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-27-at-19.57.41-350x189.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said BN was offering Johor people a new deal by fielding more than 70 percent new faces who could prove to be a game-changer for the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAlthough they will be facing other candidates of equivalent standard in terms of age, academic qualification, and new faces, BN&#8217;s\u00a0record of having provided 14 Menteri\u00a0Besar\u00a0in Johor gives us the confidence to form the state government,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early voting for the Johor election is on March 8 and polling is on March 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile,&nbsp;Ahmad Zahid said&nbsp;BN would propose implementing a new minimum wage for Johor if it gets the mandate to form the state government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was important to protect the interests of the people, especially low-income workers, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human Resource Minister&nbsp;Datuk Seri M. Saravanan had said the government was proposing to increase the minimum wage to RM1,500 a month by the end of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;JOHOR BAHRU, BN Advisory Board chairman&nbsp;Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said no matter what, BN still has to work hard to ensure victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe more the merrier. We may think more candidates will increase BN&#8217;s chances but we cannot be too optimistic and need to work hard and offer the best agenda to the\u00a0rakyat.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;We must be humble;\u00a0we are seeking the people&#8217;s mandate.\u00a0We leave it to the people to make a smart assessment,\u201d<\/em> he told reporters at Taman Cempaka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was visiting Taman Cempaka together with Johor UMNO deputy chairman&nbsp;Johor Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed and Pulai UMNO division deputy chief&nbsp;Datuk Ramlee Bohani, who is the&nbsp;BN candidate for the Kempas seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Najib said the good reception he received from Taman Cempaka residents showed that support for BN was increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kempas, in the heart of Johor Bahru city, is seeing a seven-cornered fight involving Ramlee, Johor&nbsp;Wanita PKR chief&nbsp;Napsiah Khamis Maharan,&nbsp;Nur Faizal Abdullah of&nbsp;Perikatan Nasional, Nornekman Osman of Parti Pejuang Tanah Air, and independent candidates&nbsp;Mohd Azwan Abd Rahman, Mohd Hambali Munadi and&nbsp;Mohd Suhimi A Rahman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a
