Malaysia has been ranked highly among Asian countries in an annual index study on democracy by London-based financial journal The Economist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although still grouped as a \u201cflawed democracy\u201d alongside the US and several major Western democracies, Malaysia emerged top among the 10 Southeast Asian nations with an overall score of 7.24 in the annual Democracy Index issued by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the Economist\u2019s research division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Democracy Index 2021 report by&nbsp;the research and analysis division of The Economist Group ranked Malaysia higher than Timor Leste (7.06),&nbsp;Indonesia (6.71), the Philippines (6.62),&nbsp;Singapore (6.23),&nbsp;Thailand (6.04),&nbsp;Vietnam (2.94),&nbsp;Cambodia (2.90) and&nbsp;Myanmar (1.02).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malaysia also ranked sixth in the Asia and Australasia region, and 39th\u00a0globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-10-at-19.33.01.png\" alt=\"index\" class=\"wp-image-13269\" width=\"505\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-10-at-19.33.01.png 588w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-10-at-19.33.01-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-10-at-19.33.01-160x100.png 160w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-10-at-19.33.01-350x219.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to data from 2006-2021,\u00a0Malaysia\u2019s score in 2021 showed much improvement from the previous\u00a0year\u00a0(7.19) and was the best for the country in the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Democracy Index, which began in 2006,\u00a0provides a snapshot of the state of democracy worldwide in 165 independent states and two territories based on the ratings for 60 indicators\u00a0grouped into five categories;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8211;\u00a0electoral process and pluralism; civil liberties; the functioning of government; political participation; and political culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the\u00a0Democracy Index 2021, Malaysia scored\u00a09.58 for\u00a0electoral process and pluralism;\u00a0the functioning of government (7.86),\u00a0political participation (7.22),\u00a0\u00a0political culture (6.25), and\u00a0civil liberties (5.29).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norway\u00a0leads the index globally with a 9.75 score, followed by\u00a0New Zealand (9.37) and\u00a0Finland (9.27) while\u00a0North Korea (1.08), Myanmar (1.02), and Afghanistan (0.32)\u00a0are at the bottom of the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe results reflect the continuing negative impact of the COVID-19\u00a0pandemic on democracy and freedom around the world for a second successive year,\u201d<\/em> the report stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It further said that the pandemic\u00a0has resulted in an unprecedented withdrawal of civil liberties among developed democracies and authoritarian regimes alike, among others by requiring proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for participation in public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cPluralism and competing alternatives are essential for a functioning democracy, but differences of opinion in the US have hardened into political sectarianism and institutional gridlock,\u201d<\/em> the survey added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/news.php?id=2050965\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 &#8212;
