{"id":13169,"date":"2022-01-29T11:06:48","date_gmt":"2022-01-29T03:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13169"},"modified":"2022-01-29T11:06:49","modified_gmt":"2022-01-29T03:06:49","slug":"malaysias-external-trade-surpasses-rm2-trillion-in-2021-azmin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13169","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia&#8217;s external trade surpasses RM2 trillion in 2021 &#8211; Azmin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 &#8212;\u00a0Malaysia\u2019s external trade registered another historic performance in 2021, surpassing RM2 trillion for the first time, as well as recording\u00a0the fastest growth since 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior Minister cum International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said Malaysia\u2019s exports hit\u00a0RM1.24 trillion, achieving 99 percent\u00a0of the 12th Malaysia Plan 2021-2025 (12MP) export projection for 2025 &#8212;\u00a0four years ahead of the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cTrade surplus was posted for 24 consecutive years since 1998. These remarkable achievements were driven by robust external demand and higher commodity prices,\u201d<\/em> he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-09-at-13.19.34.png\" alt=\"external\" class=\"wp-image-9873\" width=\"495\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-09-at-13.19.34.png 584w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-09-at-13.19.34-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-09-at-13.19.34-185x100.png 185w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-09-at-13.19.34-350x189.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Azmin said\u00a0exports to major trading partners, namely ASEAN, China, the United States,\u00a0and the European Union\u00a0recorded a new high with\u00a0strong double-digit expansion, while exports to Japan recovered with\u00a0double-digit growth after declining for three consecutive years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSignificant export expansion was also registered to emerging markets such as Costa Rica, Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, and Iraq. Exports to free-trade agreement (FTA) partners showed an upward trajectory with a new high value after two consecutive years of contraction.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cExports of the manufactured, agriculture, and mining sectors registered double-digit expansion with manufactured goods reaching RM1 trillion mark for the first time,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohamed Azmin said the resilient growth was boosted by strong exports of electrical and electronics (E&amp;E)\u00a0products, petroleum products, manufacturers of metal, palm oil and palm oil-based agriculture products, rubber products, and\u00a0chemicals and chemical products, each posted a record high value with double-digit expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMalaysia\u2019s solid trade performance was in tandem with countries in the region, notably Indonesia, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore which are also recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 crisis,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving ahead, he said Malaysia\u2019s trade growth is anticipated to sustain its positive momentum, underpinned by continuous demand for E&amp;E and commodity-based products, while global economic uncertainties due to the emergence of new COVID-19 variants and disruptions in the supply chain may impact trade performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as
