{"id":13146,"date":"2022-01-26T13:34:43","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T05:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13146"},"modified":"2022-01-26T13:34:44","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T05:34:44","slug":"comprehensive-strategic-partnership-to-help-bolster-australia-malaysia-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=13146","title":{"rendered":"Comprehensive strategic partnership to help bolster Australia-Malaysia ties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26\u00a0 &#8212; Australia is upbeat\u00a0that its trade and investment ties with Malaysia will improve\u00a0further this year, as both countries work towards economic recovery in the post-pandemic period.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s Deputy High Commissioner Hannah Birdsey said the optimism is also encouraged\u00a0by the synergy both countries forged under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEconomic recovery is very important for both countries at this point in time. We see that there are real opportunities for us to be able to do more with Malaysia in that space.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt is also something that we are continuing to put a lot of emphasis and energy into,\u201d<\/em> she told Bernama in an interview at the High Commission here, recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia and Australia have elevated their diplomatic relations to CSP, which is underpinned by three\u00a0areas of cooperation &#8211; economic\u00a0prosperity, society and technology,\u00a0and defense and regional security, on Jan 27, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-26-at-13.33.21.png\" alt=\"comprehensive\" class=\"wp-image-13147\" width=\"435\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-26-at-13.33.21.png 552w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-26-at-13.33.21-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-26-at-13.33.21-171x100.png 171w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-26-at-13.33.21-350x204.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Australia and Malaysia are already pursuing cooperation in areas such as marine plastics, waste management and the circular economy, and responses to climate change and other environmental challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Birdsey\u00a0said there has been\u00a0a lot of interest from Australian businesses in Malaysia as an export or an investment destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, Malaysia was Australia\u2019s third-largest trading partner in ASEAN and the 11th\u00a0largest overall with total two-way trade valued\u00a0at A$19.3 billion (RM58 billion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia is also Australia\u2019s second-largest investment destination in ASEAN, after Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Birdsey said digital economy and cybersecurity were also among the sectors with vast opportunities that both countries could&nbsp;further collaborate on, adding that Australia is ready to offer its expertise and&nbsp;experiences with Malaysia on this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSo\u00a0we&#8217;re looking to share lessons in that space, and to build relationships between government agencies, share lessons, share challenges, and move forward on\u00a0those things together,\u201d<\/em> she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia was Australia&#8217;s eighth-largest source country for international arrivals in&nbsp;2019, with almost 385,000 Malaysians visiting Australia and over 368,000 Australians visiting Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the High Commission, in 2019, Malaysia ranked sixth as a source country for international students&nbsp;with over 24,000 Malaysians studying in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A further 20,000 Malaysian and international students were studying for Australian qualifications in Malaysia in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia and Australia&#8217;s bilateral\u00a0relationship predates Malaya\u2019s independence.\u00a0Australia opened the Australian Commission (later High Commission) in Kuala Lumpur in 1955 while Malaysia (then Malaya) established its High Commission in Canberra in 1956.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the relations remain\u00a0strong, dynamic,\u00a0and\u00a0growing\u00a0more diverse across a broad range of sectors.\u00a0Aside from geopolitics, economy, and security, the ties\u00a0also include education, tourism, and more recently in new areas such as\u00a0people smuggling, sports, and cybersecurity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides bilateral relations, both countries also work closely on other regional and international platforms including in ASEAN-Australia Strategic Partnership, East Asia Summit, the United Nations, Commonwealth,\u00a0Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the\u00a0\u00a0Five Power Defence Arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In economy and trade, Australia and Malaysia are also involved in the Malaysia-Australia Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA), ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP)\u00a0and the\u00a0Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/news.php?id=2046684\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26\u00a0 &#8212;
