{"id":12982,"date":"2022-01-12T12:47:15","date_gmt":"2022-01-12T04:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=12982"},"modified":"2022-01-12T12:47:17","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T04:47:17","slug":"penang-govt-rules-out-snap-polls-to-wait-for-general-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=12982","title":{"rendered":"Penang govt rules out snap polls, to wait for general election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>GEORGE TOWN, Jan 12 &#8212; Penang state government has ruled out the possibility of a snap election as the present administration has the number to sustain a stable government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said with the next general election being just a little bit more&nbsp;than a year away, there is no need for any snap election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe have the numbers to sustain a stable government as\u00a0compared to certain states which have a slim majority that creates\u00a0an unstable situation. I think that is\u00a0our main consideration not to have a separate state poll, we will have it concurrently with the national poll or general election,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he told Bernama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chow, who is also the Penang DAP\u00a0chairman, said a snap election was\u00a0not part of the state government\u2019s plan right now as its focus is\u00a0to continue serving the people who are\u00a0struggling due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-12.44.19.png\" alt=\"snap\" class=\"wp-image-12983\" width=\"464\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-12.44.19.png 581w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-12.44.19-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-12.44.19-186x100.png 186w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-12.44.19-350x188.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe main consideration is that the need does not arise here and we are able to provide a stable government to the people now,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he quipped when\u00a0asked to comment on any possibility of snap polls in Penang after Johor was rumored to hold it soon following\u00a0the death of Kempas assemblyman Datuk Osman Sapian on Dec 21, which left the Johor government with only a one-seat majority in the state assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penang has 40 state seats, 35 of which held by Pakatan Harapan comprising DAP with 19 seats, PKR (14) and Parti Amanah Negara (two).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bersatu and Barisan Nasional have two seats each, while PAS has one seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the span of two years, Malaysia&nbsp;has witnessed three state elections, beginning&nbsp;with Sabah on Sept 26,&nbsp;2020, Melaka on Nov 20, 2021, and Sarawak on Dec 18, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, Chow together with the state\u2019s Environment and Welfare Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh, Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, Youth, and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, Penang DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying, and several Penang state assemblymen\u00a0visited Penang&#8217;s Bernama office to distribute mandarin oranges in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/\">NMT<\/a> as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernama.com\/en\/politics\/news.php?id=2042420\">Bernama<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEORGE TOWN, Jan 12 &#8212;
