BUTTERWORTH, Dec 30 — Penang Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs using courier service and seized 18kg of methamphetamine worth RM1.8 million found hidden in children bicycle tires in a raid on\u00a0the courier company at Raja Uda Business Centre here on Dec 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Penang Customs director\u00a0Abdul Halim Ramli said acting on intelligence findings, a team from the department\u2019s\u00a0narcotics unit raided the courier company at 6 pm and seized 10 boxes containing children’s bicycle frames and tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUpon search, the team found a total of 104 packets of\u00a0methamphetamine hidden in the bicycle tires in the 10 boxes. The drugs, weighing 18kg, are estimated to be worth RM1.8 million,\u201d<\/em> he told a press conference here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said further investigations were being done to identify the sender, which is a bicycle seller in Penang, and the recipient, whose address is in an Oceanian country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe believe the drugs were meant to be smuggled out of the country and the drug syndicate had used the courier service as a tactic to fool the authorities,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abdul Halim said no arrests were made so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe public with information on such a syndicate or activity are urged to channel the information to the authority so that it can be curbed,\u201d<\/em> he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 39 B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
