Kuala Lumpur, Dec 17 — The corruption trial of Lim Guan Eng today heard that the DAP leader had asked for 10% of the profits from the Penang undersea tunnel project during a car conversation in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli, the director of the project\u2019s main contractor Consortium Zenith BUCG, said the request by Lim, who was the Penang chief minister at the time, shocked him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the time, I was quite shocked because the matter came from YB Lim Guan Eng\u2019s mouth, and I thought about the request because I did not expect it would come from YB Lim Guan Eng\u2019s mouth whom I thought all this while was a person who was against corruption,\u201d he told the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zarul told the court he was introduced to Lim by former minister Nazri Aziz at a hotel lounge here in January 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI took the opportunity to tell YB (Lim) that BUCG was keen to undertake any available project in Penang.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe looked interested in what I had told him. From there, we exchanged numbers,\u201d<\/em> he said, pointing out the meeting had not been planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that several weeks after the meeting, he contacted Lim, who invited him and BUCG representatives to his office at Komtar to give a briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zarul is the star witness in the trial, where Lim, as the former Penang chief minister, is charged with soliciting gratification to help a company be awarded the undersea tunnel project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks from the businessman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is also accused of two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land to two companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The charge is linked to the four corruption charges against him related to the tunnel project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hearing will resume on March 24 after Zarul told the court he was suffering from stomach aches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
