KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10\u00a0—\u00a0The international community\u00a0has high expectations on Malaysia\u00a0to make good on its pledges and commitments that it made when\u00a0elected\u00a0to the\u00a0United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council for the 2022 -2024 term,\u00a0says Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Malaysia is honored\u00a0by the strong support shown by the international community over its election to the council and will continue pursuing\u00a0the right of access to a safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a council member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At the center of it all, Malaysia will prioritize the rights of vulnerable groups, particularly children, women, the indigenous people, the disabled, and the elderly, who will be disproportionately affected by climate change,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saifuddin said this in his pre-recorded address when officiating the 2021 Human Rights Day Forum: “Access to Safe, Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment As a Human Right.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2022 -2024 term after it won one of the 18 seats with 183 votes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saifuddin said that Malaysia seeks to further empower the youths to have a bigger role at all levels of decision-making, as they have galvanized movements around the globe\u00a0in pushing world leaders to take immediate action to address climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As our youths and children will inherit the earth from us, they are our main stakeholder in ensuring our planetary health,”<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
