{"id":12451,"date":"2021-11-24T11:24:46","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T03:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=12451"},"modified":"2021-11-24T11:24:48","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T03:24:48","slug":"bonnie-heads-malaysian-challenge-in-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=12451","title":{"rendered":"Bonnie heads Malaysian challenge in Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 &#8212; Tokyo Paralympic Games champion\u00a0Bonnie Bunyau Gustin will head Malaysia\u2019s challenge at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championship in\u00a0Tbilisi, Georgia\u00a0from Nov\u00a027 to Dec 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a072 kilogrammes (kg) category champion will be accompanied\u00a0by five other athletes, including Tokyo Paralympics silver medallist\u00a0Jong Yee Khie (107 kg) and Bonnie\u2019s\u00a0brother, Bryan Junency Gustin (80 kg).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National coach&nbsp;Jamil Adam said Georgia is an important outing as it is the&nbsp;first competition for his powerlifters to collect qualifying points for&nbsp;the 2024 Paralympic Games in&nbsp;Paris, France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur preparations for Georgia are\u00a0proceeding smoothly although the athletes only returned to train\u00a0in the middle of October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-28-at-12.37.33.png\" alt=\"georgia\" class=\"wp-image-11122\" width=\"493\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-28-at-12.37.33.png 580w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-28-at-12.37.33-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-28-at-12.37.33-185x100.png 185w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-28-at-12.37.33-350x189.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe competition in Tbilisi is more towards helping the para-athletes to get back their rhythm after a one-month rest following the Tokyo Paralympics,\u201d he said when contacted by Bernama today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;52-year-old coach is&nbsp;targeting podium finishes for Bonnie and Yee Khie and top-five positions for the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he did not want to pressure the athletes and expect them to begin peaking two years before Paris&nbsp;2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have two championships next year offering qualifying points to Paris 2024, namely&nbsp;in South Korea in May and the Para Asian Games in&nbsp;Hangzhou, China in&nbsp;October.
