{"id":12266,"date":"2021-11-05T15:26:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T07:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=12266"},"modified":"2021-11-05T15:26:58","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T07:26:58","slug":"sarawak-state-assembly-dissolved-making-way-for-state-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=12266","title":{"rendered":"Sarawak State Assembly dissolved, making way for state election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUCHING, Nov 5 &#8212; The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly has been dissolved effective Nov 3, thus making way for a state election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the dissolution was in compliance with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong\u00a0Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri\u2019ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah\u2019s consent to revoke the Proclamation of Emergency for Sarawak on the same date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe State Assembly Speaker will notify the Election Commission (EC) (on the dissolution of the state assembly) later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very unique situation as when the\u00a0Agong lifted the Emergency, (the state assembly) automatically dissolved. But it just a matter of procedure that we will ask\u00a0the Speaker to officially inform the EC,\u201d\u00a0he told a press conference\u00a0here today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-05-at-15.24.59.png\" alt=\"dissolved\" class=\"wp-image-12267\" width=\"487\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-05-at-15.24.59.png 524w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-05-at-15.24.59-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-05-at-15.24.59-166x100.png 166w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-05-at-15.24.59-350x210.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, the King gave his consent for the Emergency in Sarawak to be lifted earlier after consulting the Sarawak Governor and considering the advice of the Prime Minister, Attorney General, and relevant government agency heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abang Johari said had the Emergency not been proclaimed, the State Assembly would have been dissolved by June 7, 2021, as required by the State Constitution\u00a0and that his Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government would no longer have the people&#8217;s mandate, which was given in 2016, to govern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn order to hold true to our oath to preserve and protect the Constitution of the State of Sarawak and the Federal Constitution and safeguard the rights of the people to choose their own government,&nbsp;the GPS government feels that it would be a betrayal to that oath if we&nbsp;were to hang on to power under the veil of a state of emergency whereas the people&#8217;s mandate to govern had expired,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that was&nbsp;why they&nbsp;consulted and advised the Sarawak Governor (Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) to seek the King\u2019s&nbsp;consent to terminate earlier the Proclamation of Emergency for Sarawak, which was promulgated on Aug 2 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abang Johari said knowing that the health and safety of the people of Sarawak is paramount, the state government had&nbsp;had a careful and constant engagement with health authorities and other stakeholders in order for the election to be held with all the necessary standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe rates of COVID-19 vaccination in the state has also achieved a level which would be acceptable by the authorities for the election to be conducted safely,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;
