The implementation of a sales tax on petroleum products by Sarawak has been\u00a0one of the ways of\u00a0 \u201crevenue re-engineering\u201d which enabled the state government to generate more income and help those impacted by the\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said since the sales tax was imposed on petroleum products in 2019, the state has netted an extra RM6.8 billion which has been used for the benefit of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis aid has been\u00a0given to not only the B50 income group but also the M40 group who\u00a0have been affected by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-24-at-10.43.09.png\" alt=\"revenue\" class=\"wp-image-12161\" width=\"491\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-24-at-10.43.09.png 582w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-24-at-10.43.09-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-24-at-10.43.09-186x100.png 186w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-24-at-10.43.09-350x188.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe state government has also helped affected enterprises to go online,\u201d&nbsp;he told Bernama in a special interview recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awang Tengah, who is also the state\u2019s Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industry Terminal,\u00a0and Entrepreneur Development, said the tax revenue will also be used for development projects as well as\u00a0major projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has emphasized the importance of giving help to those affected by the pandemic,\u201d he said, adding that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state have been receiving aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the state government has helped people and businesses in Sarawak through a series of seven aid packages called&nbsp;Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang (BKSS) which involved over RM5.3 billion since early 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough Budget 2022, the Sarawak Chief Minister has stated that BKSS 8.0 will be launched to help SMEs in the state recover, apart from one-off cash aid to bachelors, newborn babies, or\u00a0mothers who have given birth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awang Tengah said the state government will also channel aid worth RM97 million to the Sarawak disaster committee for the management of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;
