The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) had summoned Beijing&#8217;s envoy on Monday to Malaysia in protest after Chinese vessels entered its maritime economic zone in the disputed South China Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chinese ambassador was summoned \u201cto convey Malaysia\u2019s position and protest against the presence and activities of Chinese vessels, including a survey vessel, in Malaysia\u2019s exclusive economic zone\u201d, the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MOFA accused China of going against local and international law with the presence of its ships off the coast of Sabah and Sarawak, on the Malaysian part of Borneo island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monday\u2019s move was the second time this year the government has summoned Beijing\u2019s envoy to protest Chinese activity related to the hotly contested waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pesawat-china-1.jpg\" alt=\"south china\" class=\"wp-image-9788\" width=\"501\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pesawat-china-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pesawat-china-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pesawat-china-1-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pesawat-china-1-180x100.jpg 180w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pesawat-china-1-350x194.jpg 350w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pesawat-china-1-800x445.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, Putrajaya scrambled fighter jets to intercept 16 Chinese military aircraft that appeared off Borneo over the South China Sea, where it has overlapping territorial claims with Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It accused China of breaching its sovereignty, while Beijing said the flight was routine training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia-China relations are usually warm but have been ruffled by recent tension-raising incidents over the sea, which is home to key shipping lanes and is believed to harbor rich oil and gas deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMalaysia\u2019s consistent position and actions are based on international law, in defense of our sovereignty and sovereign rights in our waters,\u201d the foreign ministry statement said, adding the country had \u201calso protested against the previous encroachments by other foreign vessels in our waters\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has laid claim to nearly all of the South China Sea and has built numerous military outposts on small islands and atolls, angering others with competing claims to the waters, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, and Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US routinely sends warships through these contested waters to assert international rights to freedom of navigation, angering China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\">NMT<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kuala Lumpur, Oct 5 &#8212;
