{"id":11826,"date":"2021-10-01T11:40:09","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T03:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=11826"},"modified":"2021-10-01T11:40:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-01T03:40:10","slug":"more-than-five-decade-old-now-macc-continues-fearlessly-to-fight-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=11826","title":{"rendered":"More than five-decade-old now, MACC continues fearlessly to fight corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 \u00a0&#8212;\u00a0From just a\u00a0small unit under the Prime Minister&#8217;s Department about five decades ago, the Malaysian Anti -Corruption Commission (MACC) has now become the most feared enforcement agency, having\u00a0uncovered many high-profile corruption cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrating its 54th\u00a0anniversary today, the\u00a0MACC is more focused on combating corruption in the procurement, enforcement, and grand corruption sectors, in line with the current economic transformation and socio-cultural developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We cannot remain at the old notch,\u00a0we have gone through the post-independence era, the era of modernization, economic development, been through the\u00a0economic-financial difficulties in 1999, the country\u2019s recovery, and the change in the political landscape,\u201d\u00a0said MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-01-at-11.36.53.png\" alt=\"corruption\" class=\"wp-image-11827\" width=\"472\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-01-at-11.36.53.png 590w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-01-at-11.36.53-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-01-at-11.36.53-183x100.png 183w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-01-at-11.36.53-350x191.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He said this in a special interview with the media, which was conducted virtually in conjunction with the MACC&#8217;s anniversary celebration today with the theme &#8216;Enliven Integrity, Fight Corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Azam said various&nbsp;challenges were faced by MACC throughout the more than half a century period of&nbsp;being the leading agency in combating corruption and abuse of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said crimes in the form of grand corruption and syndicated crimes were on the rise and the agency needed more effective methods of investigation to deal with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe need to double our efforts in intelligence and investigation using more advanced technology and I will request the government to help us achieve this,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the MACC&#8217;s anniversary celebration this year, Azam said various programs had been drawn up to promote the spirit of integrity in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIntegrity means trust, responsibility, discipline, and good things in humans. If these things are not there, no matter what we do, efforts to fight corruption will not be effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Among others, we need to have appropriate laws and regulations to instill\u00a0integrity in\u00a0the society, among\u00a0government officials and MACC officers.
