KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23\u00a0 — The 12th\u00a0Malaysia Plan (12MP) will prioritize the people\u2019s welfare, social protection and people-centered projects in light of the COVID-19 pandemic situation, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the prolonged pandemic crisis has transformed the government\u2019s spending pattern, which is now more focused on post-pandemic developments for the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe 12MP will also focus on our promises related to the 1963 Malaysia Agreement\u00a0with regards to the government\u2019s commitment\u00a0to the development of Sabah and Sarawak,\u00a0encompassing the construction of roads, hospitals, schools and digital (infrastructure),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mustapa said this during RTM\u2019s\u00a0Bicara Naratif program aired last night on the theme\u00a0\u201812MP: Rebuilding the National Economy\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the 12MP will focus on addressing poverty, including issues such as the income gap as well as the rural and the urban poor, adding that the five-year plan will also focus on matters related to Sabah and Sarawak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs such, we will not be spending that much on mega projects next year, but we will continue to give attention to basic needs projects in rural areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mustapa said for next year, the government will focus on\u00a0ongoing projects such as the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS), the East Coast Rail Link\u00a0(ECRL), and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister also spoke about\u00a0the pandemic’s significant impact on the country\u2019s economy, noting that\u00a0as many as 20 percent or about 580,000 households from the M40 group have now fallen into the B40 income group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the current scenario, it is crucial for the government to prioritize issues related to the people\u2019s well-being through the\u00a012MP, such as\u00a0health and\u00a0economic hardship, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany who live in rural areas do not have social security and are self-employed, and some are working in the gig economy sector without social security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis pandemic\u00a0has prompted us to relook at some policies that did not seem to be a problem before but are now problematic. This is something we have to deal with,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
