KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — All Malaysians in Guinea are reported to be safe following the political instability in the country after the military staged a coup, seizing power from president Alpha Cond\u00e9, on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Malaysian Embassy in Conakry, Guinea, said there are currently 12 Malaysians registered with the embassy, including embassy officials and their family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEleven out of the 12 registered Malaysians are currently in Guinea, while one has returned for a break in Malaysia two weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“All are reported to be safe,\u201d said the embassy in a reply statement to Bernama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leader of an army unit that ousted Cond\u00e9, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya was reported to have said that \u201cpoverty and endemic corruption” had driven his forces to remove Cond\u00e9 from office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the army unit appeared to have 83-year-old Cond\u00e9 in\u00a0detention, telling the West African nation on state television that they\u00a0had dissolved the government and constitution, other branches of the army are yet to publicly comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the current situation in Guinea, the embassy said the situation remained calm as of press time, but fluid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe transitional forces known as the National Rally and\u00a0Development Committee (Comit\u00e9 National du Rassemblement et du D\u00e9veloppement \u2013\u00a0CNRD) are currently having a meeting with\u00a0government ministers, and various political players at the National\u00a0Assembly building (Palais du Peuple) to discuss the way forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo far, no protests have been witnessed or reported,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about the access to\u00a0basic necessities in Guinea, the Embassy\u00a0said all Malaysians have sufficient basic necessities well-stocked in their\u00a0respective residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said supermarkets, banks, big markets, and larger provision shops\u00a0had to close on Sunday and many took the decision to continue to close\u00a0the following day (Monday).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, most street vendors and neighborhood sundry stores are\u00a0operating as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Embassy also said currently, cross-border travel in and out of Guinea via air has resumed, while there is no announcement yet on land\u00a0borders that remain closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guinea, a former French colony, achieved its independence in 1958. It has a population of some 13.5 million people and has huge mineral wealth, but remains one of the poorest countries in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
