{"id":11337,"date":"2021-09-06T12:25:47","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T04:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=11337"},"modified":"2021-09-06T12:25:49","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T04:25:49","slug":"afghanistans-biggest-currency-exchange-market-reopens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=11337","title":{"rendered":"Afghanistan\u2019s biggest currency exchange market reopens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KABUL, Sept 6&nbsp;&#8212; Hundreds of people thronged a currency exchange market in the Afghan capital that reopened over the weekend after being shut since the Taliban seized control of Kabul on Aug&nbsp;15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Footage by an Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent showed the crowd at Sarai Shahzada market, the largest money exchange market in cash-strapped Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Taliban captured Kabul, exchange offices in the market were shuttered for nearly three weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exchange office owners told AA there are nearly 400 offices in the market and they have representation in a total of 120 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said money transfers can be made to many parts of the world within a minute through representative offices across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emincan Hosti, the former head of Sarai Shahzada Exchange Offices, said the market has a 70-year history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-06-at-12.22.57.png\" alt=\"exchange\" class=\"wp-image-11338\" width=\"515\" height=\"324\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is one of the centers that shape the economy of Kabul and the whole country, Hosti said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Security issues were largely resolved and economic activity increased after the Taliban captured Kabul, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Taliban are experiencing a cash shortage since the country&#8217;s assets are held abroad and the public is skeptical of the next administration\u2019s economic policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Taliban captured Kabul, banks were also shuttered for nearly two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before the branches opened, people flocked to banks to withdraw up to 20,000 Afghanis (US$231), a weekly limit imposed by the country&#8217;s central bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has already blocked Afghanistan&#8217;s access to IMF resources, including around US$440 million in new monetary reserves, due to a lack of clarity on the country&#8217;s governance structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United States&nbsp;officials said the Afghan central bank&#8217;s US$10 billion in assets abroad are likely beyond the Taliban&#8217;s reach.
