{"id":11075,"date":"2021-08-26T11:26:55","date_gmt":"2021-08-26T03:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=11075"},"modified":"2021-08-26T11:26:57","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T03:26:57","slug":"one-million-afghan-children-could-die-of-malnutrition-unicef-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=11075","title":{"rendered":"One million Afghan children could die of malnutrition, UNICEF warns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ANKARA, Aug 26\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0An estimated one million Afghan children are projected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition over the course of this year and could die without treatment, the UN warned on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said around 10 million children across Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance to survive, Anadolu Agency reported in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that an estimated 4.2 million children in Afghanistan are out of school, including more than 2.2 million girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement said that approximately 435,000 children and women in the war-torn country, where the Taliban have taken power, are internally displaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the grim reality facing Afghan children and it remains so regardless of ongoing political developments and changes in government,\u201d Fore said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-26-at-11.23.16.png\" alt=\"afghan children\" class=\"wp-image-11076\" width=\"524\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-26-at-11.23.16.png 585w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-26-at-11.23.16-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-26-at-11.23.16-161x100.png 161w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-26-at-11.23.16-350x217.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 524px) 100vw, 524px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe anticipate that the humanitarian needs of children and women will increase over the coming months amidst a severe drought and consequent water scarcity, the devastating socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the onset of winter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Urging the Taliban and other parties to ensure safety, the UN agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide called for a \u201ctimely and unfettered access to reach children in need wherever they are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many people fear retribution and are scrambling to flee the country, the Taliban have assured the security of foreign missions, international organizations, and aid agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I would like to assure you that we will not allow anybody to do anything against you,&#8221; spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in the group&#8217;s first press conference since taking control of Afghanistan on Aug&nbsp;15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group promised that it respects women\u2019s rights &#8220;within the framework of Islamic law.&#8221; &#8220;They are going to be working with us, shoulder-to-shoulder with us.
