{"id":10767,"date":"2021-08-13T15:55:35","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T07:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=10767"},"modified":"2021-08-13T15:55:37","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T07:55:37","slug":"malaysian-economy-soars-by-16-1-pct-in-second-quarter-of-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=10767","title":{"rendered":"Malaysian economy soars by 16.1 pct in second quarter of 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13\u00a0 &#8212; The Malaysian economy grew by 16.1 percent in the second quarter (Q2 2021) compared with -0.5 percent in the first quarter of the year, supported mainly by the improvement in domestic demand and continued robust exports performance, said Bank Negara Malaysia today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central bank said the strong growth also reflected the low base from the significant decline in activity during the second quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the containment measures weighed on growth, greater adaptability to restrictions and ongoing policy support have partly mitigated the impact,\u201d governor Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus said in a statement today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second quarter, economic activity picked up at the start of the second quarter, but slowed down thereafter, following the re-imposition of stricter containment measures nationwide under phase one of the full movement control order, while all economic sectors registered an improvement, particularly the manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the expenditure side, growth was driven by higher private-sector spending and strong trade activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-13-at-15.49.53.png\" alt=\"second quarter\" class=\"wp-image-10768\" width=\"519\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-13-at-15.49.53.png 589w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-13-at-15.49.53-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-13-at-15.49.53-184x100.png 184w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-13-at-15.49.53-350x190.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy registered a decline of 2.0 percent against 2.7 percent in the first quarter this year, weighed by the tighter containment measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As expected, headline inflation increased to 4.1 percent\u00a0during the quarter (Q1 2021: 0.5 percent)\u00a0due mainly to the base effect from fuel prices\u00a0as well as the lapse in the effect from the tiered electricity tariff rebate. Core inflation remained stable at 0.7 percent\u00a0during the quarter (Q1 2021: 0.7 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor said net financing to the private sector recorded an annual growth of 4.4 percent\u00a0during the quarter (Q1 2021: 4.7 percent). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outstanding loan growth moderated to 3.6 percent\u00a0while outstanding corporate bond\u00a0growth increased to 6.9 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOutstanding business loans recorded an annual growth of 1.3 percent amid slower outstanding investment-related loan growth. Nonetheless, outstanding working capital\u00a0loan growth increased during the quarter. For households, loan demand continued to be forthcoming, particularly for the purchase of residential property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On currency, she said the ringgit appreciated by 0.1 percent\u00a0against the US dollar in the second quarter\u00a0largely due to the weakening of the US dollar in the earlier part of the quarter as a result of declining real US Treasury bond yields which led investors towards higher-yielding assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, expectations for a faster pace in monetary policy normalization following the June Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which led to a slight rebalancing of investors\u2019 portfolios towards US dollar-denominated assets at the end of the quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since July 1, the ringgit has depreciated by 1.7 percent\u00a0against the US dollar (as of Aug 9).
