{"id":10622,"date":"2021-08-08T12:59:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-08T04:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=10622"},"modified":"2021-08-08T12:59:02","modified_gmt":"2021-08-08T04:59:02","slug":"thai-anti-government-protesters-return-to-the-streets-clash-with-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=10622","title":{"rendered":"Thai anti-government protesters return to the streets, clash with police"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BANGKOK, Aug 8\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0Anti-government protesters today returned to the streets in Bangkok repeating their demand for Prime Minister Prayuth Chan o-cha to step down, claiming the premier has failed to effectively handle the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defying the\u00a0ban on public gatherings and COVID-19 restrictions, more than a thousand anti-government protesters clashed with police at Din Daeng Intersection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police fired tear gas, water cannon, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd at Din Daeng Intersection after issuing\u00a0warnings to the protesters while in turn protesters threw objects including water bottles, rocks, and firecrackers at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A witness told Bernama few protesters were injured including one hit by a tear gas canister on his ankle.&nbsp;Besides that, a police truck was&nbsp;set on fire by the protesters at Victory Monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, the protesters gathered at Democracy Monument which is near the Grand Palace. However, the organizers of Free Youth and other\u00a0groups including Redem (Restart Democracy)\u00a0announced the\u00a0change of\u00a0venue to Government House where the prime minister\u2019s office is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-08-at-12.56.26.png\" alt=\"anti-government\" class=\"wp-image-10623\" width=\"513\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-08-at-12.56.26.png 590w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-08-at-12.56.26-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-08-at-12.56.26-160x100.png 160w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-08-at-12.56.26-350x218.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, shipping containers were\u00a0placed\u00a0to block the protesters\u2019 route prompting the\u00a0organizers to change the venue to\u00a0Victory Monument with the message sent through\u00a0Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Thailand is battling its worst COVID-19 outbreak, the protesters blamed&nbsp;Prayuth led government for mismanaging the COVID-19 pandemic and the slow vaccination rollout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since mid-July last year, anti-government protesters have been rallying in Bangkok and other cities, reiterating their demands for political change, including for the prime minister to step down, the dissolution of Parliament, the rewriting of the Constitution and monarchical reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last 24 hours, Thailand recorded 21,838 new COVID-19 cases and 212 deaths, bringing the total infections in the kingdom to 736,522&nbsp;
