{"id":10075,"date":"2021-06-23T20:16:29","date_gmt":"2021-06-23T12:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=10075"},"modified":"2021-06-23T20:16:30","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T12:16:30","slug":"malaysia-calls-for-global-vaccine-equity-khairy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/?p=10075","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia calls for global vaccine equity &#8211; Khairy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 &#8212; Malaysia calls for the World Bank to be a strong voice for developing countries for&nbsp;global vaccine equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Khairy Jamaluddin said that the&nbsp;hoarding of vaccines by the industrialised&nbsp;countries was immoral and the move had fallen short of respectable and responsible global leadership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are appreciative of the donations that we will be receiving from advanced countries in the coming weeks but this does not do away with what has taken place over the last few months and\u00a0that is the cornering of the vaccine market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-20.14.58.png\" alt=\"vaccine equity\" class=\"wp-image-10076\" width=\"539\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-20.14.58.png 586w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-20.14.58-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-20.14.58-185x100.png 185w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-20.14.58-350x189.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe set up COVAX&nbsp;in a global solidarity as a mechanism of vaccine equity and that has been an abysmal failure and I think the World Bank owes it to the developing countries to be a strong voice on vaccine equity in the global stage,\u201d&nbsp;he said in a special address at the launch of the Malaysia Economic Monitor &#8211; June 2021 Edition held virtually today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khairy also noted the need for renewed solidarity and urgency to narrow vaccine equity gaps that were&nbsp;leaving low- and middle-income countries behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe call for vaccine equity now and in the future. That is the only way we are going to emerge from this pandemic and future pandemic,&#8221; said Khairy, who is also a Coordinating Minister of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, he said the&nbsp;government aims to get 60 per cent&nbsp;of the population vaccinated by end-September while also continuing to support firms and preserve jobs for the rakyat through various relief packages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khairy&nbsp;said the government was rapidly increasing the number of vaccination centres (PPVs) to speed up the rollout of the immunisation programme as well as setting up&nbsp;a number of mega PPVs to ramp up the vaccination rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said there was also&nbsp;a&nbsp;target of an&nbsp;additional 1,000 general practitioners from the private sector to start to administer vaccines by June 30, as the government continuously increase the number of PPVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government is confident of administering 11 million doses in July, 13 million doses by the end of August 2021 and a further eight million doses by the end of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to be as inclusive as possible in our deployment of the vaccine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khairy said while the immunisation plan is to come to fruition, the government will continue to support firms and preserve jobs for the rakyat through various relief packages such as the latest package is Permerkasa+, worth RM40 billion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the support from the government aimed&nbsp;to help the private sector remain resilient for the immediate term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;
