The abstention rate was 50.09 per cent&nbsp;in 2015 and 53.67 per cent&nbsp;in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the exit polls, LREM&#8217;s candidates did not lead the first round in any region of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 15 ministers competed for LREM in the elections, but none of them could garner the number of votes needed to finish the first round ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-21-at-14.26.31.png\" alt=\"macron's\" class=\"wp-image-10055\" width=\"481\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-21-at-14.26.31.png 586w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-21-at-14.26.31-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-21-at-14.26.31-160x100.png 160w, https:\/\/newmalaysiatimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-21-at-14.26.31-350x219.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Exit polls showed the centre-right Les Republicains party winning 28.7 per cent&nbsp;of the national vote ahead of the far-right National Rally party with 19.4 per cent, followed by the Socialist Party, the Green party and Macron&#8217;s LREM with 10.4 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The elections were initially slated for March but were delayed twice &#8212; first by three months and then by another week &#8212; due to an exponential rise in coronavirus cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Held every six years, they will take place in 18 regional presidencies &#8212; 13 in metropolitan France and Corsica and five in the overseas territories of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Mayotte and Reunion &#8212; and will elect 1,800 councillors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voting will take place in two stages &#8212; the first round on June 20 and the second on June 26 &#8212; to elect the councillors who in turn will elect the president of the Regional Council, president of the Departmental Council and mayors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regional polls are taking place a year ahead of presidential elections and are considered a precursor as to who will take control of the Elysee in 2022.
