A lifetime of crutches

LETTER TO EDITOR

The world we are living in now is so crazy, perpetuated with a pandemic, political instability, and a lifetime of knowing just how to make enough noise for handouts. And then, there is the currently trending of #KerajaanGagal.

I wonder now is it really the government’s fault that we are in this current predicament. When we went into MCO1.0, the whole country resets but there is consistent complaints of not being able to feed themselves, pay off their debts, and basically if there is no income, they might as well contract the virus. Then, it was relaxed, and then we saw a surge in cases. And then, came the noise why were some allowed to open and some not. Then, all opened, interstate allowed and cases surged even higher. People became lax. Then we had an election and it was a ticking time bomb. We never really managed to catch a breather for the past year.

Let’s really ask ourselves now. Have we all been following the SOP and guidelines stringently? It’s not just at the Ramadan Bazaars or the Raya Bazaars. Have you seen the morning markets, the social gatherings that were posted on social media? People congregating in malls, parks, cafes, restaurants, or at homes, hosting tens of people? And let’s not forget the kayangan group who has traveled cross country in style all in the name of “work”! Have we not kid ourselves further when pictures show back-to-back traffic on the East Coast Highway AFTER it was announced you can’t travel back to home town?

On top of that, my generation that is the current bulk of Malaysians, we had grown up with a crutch. A crutch to equalize the playing field so to say. We have learned to complain and make it loud enough to be heard and it will be granted. And this is how we end up where we are now. It was years of given a crutch and to just be proud of our “jaguh kampung” heritage.

Rakyat will always find a way to convenient only themselves so that they can go about their merry-making ways. The government will continuously look like fools in their policy-making due to their incompetence in their high place. And where does that leave those who are still battling the pandemic a year on? The daily infection rate doesn’t lie. And this surge is because ONE state decided to do mass testing. I shudder to think if the entire nation decides to do mass testing for everyone. When will the Rakyat learn to own up and be accountable for their actions so that we can all stay safe? Remember #KitaJagaKita?
