KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 – Former Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has been barred from participating in all official activities of Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) for a period of three months, effective October 20, 2026, to January 19, 2027.
Bersama President Syukri Razab announced the decision on Saturday, October 17, 2026, confirming that the disciplinary action was taken following Nik Nazmi’s admission of involvement in a high-profile personal incident that recently emerged in the public domain.
Syukri stressed that the party leadership took the matter with extreme seriousness, emphasizing that misconduct allegations involving key leaders must be addressed decisively to protect the organization’s integrity, public credibility, and constituent trust.
“The decision was considered necessary and reasonable, while acknowledging Nik Nazmi’s contributions and commitment to the party since its relaunch in May,” Syukri said in an official press statement.
JAIS Investigation, Khalwat Detention, and Party Disciplinary Action
The temporary suspension comes in the wake of an ongoing enforcement investigation by state religious authorities in Selangor:
- JAIS Enforcement Action: Nik Nazmi previously confirmed that he was one of two individuals detained by officers from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) in Petaling Jaya on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
- Underlying Allegations: JAIS confirmed the detention of two individuals, including a prominent public figure, to assist ongoing investigations under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 regarding alleged khalwat (close proximity).
- Legal Cooperation: Nik Nazmi publicly stated that he intends to fully cooperate with religious authorities and the ongoing legal process.
- Suspension Scope: Under the three-month sanction, Nik Nazmi is prohibited from representing Bersama at political rallies, media events, policy committees, or official organizational functions.
- Party Leadership Response: Bersama leadership reiterated its commitment to upholding high ethical standards among its officeholders as the case moves through the Syariah judicial system.
Nik Nazmi’s political future within the party remains subject to further review pending the formal conclusion of the Syariah court proceedings.
