WASHINGTON, Oct 1 – Tech billionaire Elon Musk has been appointed to co-lead a new U.S. Pentagon initiative to examine the future of warfare, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday.
Addressing military personnel during his State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, Hegseth revealed that Musk will join other prominent figures in leading the project, designated as Project Meridian.
The 120-day initiative aims to “creatively look into the future and identify the domains we must conquer, and capabilities we must master,” according to Hegseth.
Key Focus on Autonomous Warfare and Tech Supremacy
A central pillar of the initiative focuses on autonomous warfare—the deployment of advanced weapon systems and artificial intelligence capable of executing combat operations without direct human oversight.
“We need to be looking forward into the future to achieve technological and military dominance on the battlefield for decades to come,” Hegseth emphasized.
The task force is slated to deliver its findings and strategic report within a 120-day timeframe.
Broadening Roles and Previous Government Engagement
Musk’s appointment to Project Meridian comes following his previous role leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a cost-cutting mandate established by President Donald Trump that spearheaded broad federal agency budget cuts and personnel reductions through late May 2025.
With his companies SpaceX and xAI holding significant commercial and technical overlaps with U.S. defense infrastructure, Musk’s inclusion signals a deepening integration between private tech leadership and national defense policy.
