SINGAPORE, Sept 28 – A 37-year-old Malaysian man was arrested at the Tuas Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into Singapore, while a 41-year-old Singaporean man was detained in a separate operation on the same day.
The joint enforcement actions yielded a combined drug haul valued at over S$1 million (approximately RM3.20 million).
In a statement released Monday, Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) revealed that officers intercepted the Malaysian rider on Sept 23 after discovering sealed packets falsely labeled as commercial biscuits hidden inside the rear storage box of his Malaysia-registered motorcycle.
Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers alerted to the scene conducted further searches, seizing approximately 6,961 grams of heroin, 1,116 grams of ‘Ice’ (methamphetamine), and 1,032 grams of cannabis from the vehicle.
In a follow-up operation conducted later that day, CNB officers raided a location in the vicinity of Tampines Street 83, arresting the 41-year-old Singaporean national.
The second raid resulted in the seizure of 790 grams of heroin, 602 grams of cannabis, 127 grams of ‘Ice’, 51 grams of ecstasy tablets, 21 grams of ketamine, and S$33,086 in cash.
Both suspects are currently under investigation under Section 5 and Section 7 of Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act 1973. Under the act, any person convicted of importing controlled drugs above specific threshold quantities into Singapore faces the mandatory death penalty.
