MELAKA, Sept 27 — The Melaka state government has allocated nearly RM100,000 for the Jualan Melaka Sayang Rakyat (MeSRa) sales initiative to help residents save on household expenses through coupon subsidies for daily necessities.
Senior Exco Member for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Datuk Rais Yasin stated that the allocation subsidises over 40 grocery and fresh produce items, including chicken, prawns, squid, cockles, and meat. Under the programme, 2,000 chickens were offered at RM5 each, while MeSRa grocery bundles were priced from as low as RM40.
“Jualan MeSRa is a new state government initiative to ease the people’s cost of living by offering fresh produce and groceries at lower prices through coupon subsidies,” Rais told reporters at Pasar Besar Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB) last night.
Rais added that 2,000 coupons worth RM50 each were distributed to members of the public to be spent at stalls operated by 25 primary market traders. The sales event was held in conjunction with the “Melaka Bila Larut Malam 2026” programme, officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and attended by MBMB Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman.
In addition to easing the burden on consumers, Rais noted that the initiative provides a platform to boost the local economy for market traders, particularly through night-time commerce. Visitors at the event expressed appreciation for the discount coupons and urged the state government to organize the sales on a regular basis to support working families.
