KUANTAN, Sept 12 – A 65-year-old Indian national drowned after slipping off a boat ladder following a discovery scuba diving session in the waters of Renggis, Pulau Tioman, on Saturday morning.
Rompin district police chief Supt Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi stated that police received an emergency notification regarding the drowning of the victim, identified as Sabiya Shiek, from the Tekek Health Clinic at approximately 10:00 am. Initial investigations revealed that Sabiya had participated in an introductory scuba diving activity alongside six family members, guided by two instructors and a dive master.
According to police, the victim requested to return to the vessel after completing the diving session. Elaborating on the sequence of events, Sharif Shai said in a statement on Saturday, “After the session, the victim informed the instructor that she wished to return to the boat. However, after her child helped remove her diving gear, Sabiya is believed to have slipped while climbing the ladder to get on board and fell back into the sea.”
Following her fall, diving instructors launched an immediate search operation in the surrounding waters. Rescuers located Sabiya approximately 15 minutes later, lying unconscious on the sandy seabed near the dive site.
She was brought ashore to the Tekek Health Clinic on Pulau Tioman, where a attending medical officer pronounced her dead upon arrival. Authorities confirmed that a post-mortem examination is scheduled to be performed at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Kuantan on Monday.
