KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — Civil society group Sekretariat Gerak Gempur Media Sosial Rakyat (SEKPUR) and PKR leaders have urged police to conduct a thorough investigation into claims by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang that a foreign power plotted to overthrow the Malaysian government in 2014.
Speaking at a press conference today, SEKPUR Political Bureau chairman Shahbudin Embun described the allegations as a serious matter involving national sovereignty, noting that the alleged foreign interference took place during the administration of then-Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“This is a sensitive matter. Under the Penal Code, it could indicate the presence of mens rea. If there were elements of foreign interference 10 years ago, we are concerned that such elements may still exist today,” Shahbudin said.
Shahbudin called on the government and the Inspector-General of Police to examine the matter from all angles, including whether any foreign funds were funneled to local entities to unseat the government at the time. Following Abdul Hadi’s speech at the PAS annual muktamar in Kelantan, SEKPUR lodged a police report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Sept 3.
Dang Wangi acting police chief Supt Nuzulan Mohd Din confirmed receiving the report at 8:28 pm, adding that the case is currently being investigated by Wangsa Maju police.
Meanwhile, Setiawangsa PKR chief Datuk Afdlin Shauki Aksan confirmed lodging a separate police report on Sept 6, calling on authorities to investigate whether the statements violated the Sedition Act 1948 or Sections 124B and 124C of the Penal Code.
“Any individual making serious allegations involving foreign interference in the country’s political affairs must be prepared to give a statement and provide evidence to the authorities,” Afdlin Shauki said.
The filings follow three earlier police reports lodged over the same matter by Bandar Tun Razak PKR leaders at the Cheras Police Station.
