Malaysian Airline Pilot Detained in Jakarta Believed to Have Smuggled RM45m Drugs Since 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — A 39-year-old local airline pilot arrested in Indonesia last month in connection with a major RM45 million narcotics bust is believed to have repeatedly smuggled illegal substances out of Malaysia since 2024.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) Director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan revealed that investigations indicate the suspect exploited his commercial flight schedules to transport drugs across international borders to multiple destinations.

“This was not the first time, because he had transported drugs to several countries on several occasions,” Hussein said when contacted.

The pilot’s long-standing trafficking activities were exposed during an interrogation conducted by a team of NCID officers in Jakarta recently. Hussein noted that the interrogation yielded critical intelligence, leading to the discovery of several drug trafficking syndicate networks operating across Malaysia and abroad, including Indonesia.

Following these disclosures, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is actively tracking down remaining members of the syndicate, tracing the financial trail of proceeds generated from the trafficking operations, and sharing intelligence with international drug enforcement partners.

Addressing how the suspect managed to circumvent security screening at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Hussein clarified that the pilot operated independently without accomplice support from airport personnel.

“We are satisfied that there was no involvement of an insider in the process of the suspect passing through security checks at KLIA. However, the modus operandi used cannot be disclosed to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation,” Hussein stated.

Hussein expressed appreciation to the Indonesian National Police (POLRI) for their close inter-agency cooperation throughout the investigation, particularly during the interrogation session that concluded on Friday (Aug 14). He reaffirmed that PDRM will not file an extradition request for the pilot, as the suspect must undergo the full judicial process under Indonesian law.

The suspect was initially apprehended on July 29 by Indonesian authorities at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after arriving from Kuala Lumpur. A search conducted by POLRI uncovered 15 packages containing 70,114 ecstasy and methamphetamine capsules weighing approximately 25 kilogrammes, estimated to be worth RM45 million based on Indonesian market valuations.
