MMEA and GOF Foil Maritime Smuggling Attempt Near Lumut, Detain 34 Illegal Immigrants

IPOH, Aug 10 — A joint operational strike by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the General Operations Force (GOF) has successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 34 illegal immigrants into the country via sea routes near Lumut early yesterday morning.

The coordinated enforcement mission, which commenced on Saturday, deployed two MMEA tactical assets—KM Nusa and Bot Penggalang 1639—to perform targeted patrol, detection, and interception duties along vulnerable coastal corridors.

Perak Maritime Director Captain Mohamad Shukri Khotob confirmed that Bot Penggalang 1639 picked up a suspicious vessel, believed to have departed from Indonesia, making a stealth approach towards Teluk Frigi Beach under cover of darkness at approximately 4:20 am yesterday.

“Upon realising the presence of enforcement assets, the boat sped towards the shore before landing in the area. A GOF ground team stationed there acted swiftly and successfully detained the 34 illegal immigrants at 5 am,” Mohamad Shukri said in an official statement today.

The detained group consists of 22 men and 12 women. Following their apprehension on the beachhead, all 34 illegal immigrants were handed over to the GOF for further legal processing in accordance with national immigration laws.

Mohamad Shukri highlighted that the successful interdiction demonstrates the effectiveness of integrated multi-agency operations between maritime and land-based security forces in dismantling migrant smuggling attempts and safeguarding territorial waters.

“The MMEA remains committed to strengthening enforcement and surveillance in national waters to curb illegal cross-border activities, including migrant smuggling and the entry of illegal immigrants by sea,” he added.
