Bersatu Remains Legitimate Perikatan Nasional Member – Azmin Ali

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has affirmed that its membership in Perikatan Nasional (PN) remains valid and lawful, announcing plans to lodge a formal complaint with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) over alleged constitutional breaches by the coalition’s leadership.

Bersatu Secretary-General Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali rejected assertions made by the PAS President that Bersatu’s membership in the coalition had automatically lapsed, describing the claim as baseless and directly conflicting with the PN Constitution.

Azmin clarified that no clause within the coalition’s governing constitution provides for the automatic termination or lapsing of any component party’s membership. Instead, any decision regarding a member party’s status can only be finalized by the PN Presidential Council under Clause 7A of the constitution.

“To date, the Presidential Council has never convened to determine Bersatu’s membership in Perikatan Nasional. Therefore, Bersatu remains a legitimate member party of Perikatan Nasional. The PAS President has no right or veto power to determine Bersatu’s position in Perikatan Nasional,” Azmin stated in a press statement today.

He criticized the PAS President’s remark as reckless, adding that it demonstrated a lack of basic understanding regarding the coalition’s constitutional framework.

Azmin pointed to Clause 7.1 of the PN Constitution, which explicitly guarantees that every component party possesses full rights to attend meetings, express views, and vote at all organizational levels, including the Supreme Council, State Liaison Bodies, and Division Liaison Bodies.

He strongly condemned the actions of the PN Chairman and Secretary-General for preventing Bersatu representatives from attending a PN Supreme Council meeting on July 16, 2026, during which decisions were finalized regarding seat allocations and electoral cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the recent Negeri Sembilan state election.

“The action of the Perikatan Nasional Chairman and Perikatan Nasional Secretary-General preventing Bersatu representatives from attending the Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council meeting on July 16, 2026, which made decisions regarding seat allocation and cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) in the recent Negeri Sembilan State Election, contradicts the Perikatan Nasional Constitution. Bersatu will make a formal complaint to the Registrar of Societies Malaysia regarding this serious constitutional violation,” he emphasized.

Azmin further charged that PN, under PAS dominance, no longer upholds its own constitution, disregards good governance principles, and acts in an arbitrary and undemocratic manner.

He reiterated that Bersatu will continue to pursue legal remedies in accordance with the law and the Federal Constitution while upholding principles of justice and moderation to guarantee a dignified and prosperous future for Malaysia.
